Okay, before drones, it was RC helicopters and planes, at least in Germany, it was for a while. They were everywhere, near airports, satisfying their owner's needs for stupidity, outside windows in residential areas, satisfying their owner's needs for voyeuristic experience, over recreational parks, satisfying their owner's needs for having thrown hard things after them ... you get the gist.
So, for a long time, anything RC that was flying was limited to certain "model airports" and the surroundings and if for example a RC helicopter was caught outside, they made you bleed by fine if they caught you. The thing is, anything radio controlled is not so entirely anonymous as some people think. You can actually get some pretty good bearings on a radio controller over about three times the distance, you can control a drone with it.

These drones will become a worse hazard than birds in the near future. There are idiots who try to film planes landing from 10 ft away. Others just have no idea that they fly through air routes. There is only one solution: Designated drone flying areas like Jwocky described there are for model planes too. Fly outside the area and await a long jail sentence. Attempt to murder 100+ people deserves such sentence.

The plane in this film had a lucky escape.

It is really easy to cut off more of the wing with that weight and speed. Once a private jet cut off a part of the wing of a GOL 737 with it's winglet. Just imagine how light a winglet is, and it can slice off a part of the wing. The 737 crashed after that.

No, i did not. Thanks for clearing that up. What the hell is not fake news anymore nowadays? :-) Even film can not be trusted. Need to triple check everything on fakeness before posting.

The text i wrote is still valid though. (not fake news, not alternative facts).

Kind regards, Vincent

the vid might be a fabrication, but the extent of possible damage such collision were to occur seems to be not!

I think the popularity of multi rotor drones is gotten a bit out of hand. The problem with them is that they don't require any skill of piloting or aerodynamics knowledge, a lot of them have built in stabilizing pezio-gyros that make them unbelievably steady, even in gusty winds. Their biggest danger is that if a motor dies, or one of the props breaks they become uncontrollable and esp. the early models, (before the started making safety standards for them) would go off wildly careening about when a motor fried or it's propeller blade thrown. They also have to carry a lot of battery pack on some of the bigger ones to have any loiter time and the batteries have a big problem of bursting into a very hot flame if they're severely damaged in a crash.

I used to make ( build from my own hand drawn plans..) and fly small sized pioneering and vintage WWI scale Balsa stick and shrink film model electric RC model aircraft, and flew at an approved Academy of Model Aeronautics registered field and at certain ball fields at small schools on weekends. I think that RC 'modellers' are a disappearing species, as hardly anyone actually builds from scratch or kits anymore, They also are a lot more circumspect as to where they do their piloting.

I know, there are RC modelers building ships out there.

This whole drone versus wing thing reminds me to that other thread we have about this wonderfully computed wing without x-stability. A good heavy drone would probably be able to rip of half a wing with those things, especially if the tanks in the wing are only half full.

Yeah sad isn't it? That video went viral several years ago but they ended up admitting it was faked after Southwest went on record saying none of their planes were invovled in any sort of accident with a quadcopter. And then there were plenty of people accusing Southwest of blatantly lying about it too.

Ahh the internet. Even Snopes can't really be trusted sometimes.
