I am now trying to generate the whole Earth with the OSM coastlines and crop later.

Instead of first cropping and then converting from lines to polygon.

The problem I think is that when I crop it first, it forms open polygons and that leads to features with no geometry :(

Why do you convert from lines to polygons at all? Aren't the landmass parts downloaded from geofabrik.de already polygons?
[EDIT] Ah, forget it, it's not about landmass but about streets and railways, right? :D

Oh sorry, I downloaded the coastline from http://openstreetmapdata.com/data/coastlines
and used roads+streams from geofabrik.de

I cant use the coastlines from geofabik.de since I want the other nearby countries too. (Or I have to merge which is more difficult)

But isn't it easier to use land polygons (from http://openstreetmapdata.com/data/land-polygons) instead of coast lines?
