I know it from the mid '80ies, so before that. Actually thinking of it, less often a prop blade comes off, but much more often ice blocks are hurled from the props.

It is normally not so obvious as on that atr. More like just an extra layer of skin. So you barely notice it between all the other rivet lines.

When a pilot once pointed it out to me on a Saab340, standing right next to it, i still did not see it immediately.

In the Do-228, it was integrated, so you can't see it from the outside.

Perhaps on the ATR there was a (re)call to add additional layers. I remember an incident where the prop narrowly missed a woman by just inches penetrating through the cabin. I really can't recall seeing ATRs before with that, until recently.

Just to add a beautifully filmed skid example to Jwocky's examples of the planes that have their engines built to be skids. The skids are very useful in Indonesia. They happen to do such things quite often.
You can see the plane appear from the clouds, above the fuselage of the waiting plane.

What happened here is an unstable approach from a way too low cloud base (no ils guidance), resulting in a very hard touchdown ripping off the main gear. But the skid-engines keep the plane beautiful on center line and save the day.

Gosh, I did my share on Indonesia flights years ago and I wonder, how often it was close to such a scene. I remember some quite hard touch downs.

There was a time when it was a thing for travel agents and companies to avoid Indonesian airlines, there was a real blacklist going on back then. I'm not sure now.

I tried, if I had to fly Indonesian Airlines, to stick with Garuda, they were back then still the better ones. There was an airline called "Merpati", doing mostly local flights between the bigger islands and we always assumed "pati" means "kaput" and "mer" would mean "more".
