The WWI aircraft

It's been a long time since our last flight for the USA Tour, when we arrived
to Providence flying Charter Aircraft (propellers) on late September.. October was a rest month to the Tour, since the multiplayer events calendar
was action-packed with the festival events.

But it's time now to re-engage in the last few legs of the USA Tour. And I
hope to count with as strong of a participation as the Tour have enjoyed every
leg since the fifth. (The earlier stages had to deal with a very cold FG
Multiplayer environment)

This time, for the leg 51st, the tour will be completing the shortest leg in
terms of distance between hubs (only 40nm as the crow flies). We will be
arriving to the state of Massachussetts, at the General E.L Logan Airport
(KBOS). We will use early aircrafts, historically used during the WWI
conflict --or alternative a era-appropriate aircraft. We will fly only with
the help of a compass, and following Visual Rules, mostly following coastlines
towards the Boston Bay.

We will benefit largely from the amazing work by Lester in these kind of
aircrafts. And we will have lots of fun enjoying this very pioneer way of
flying.

Aircrafts

Any aircraft that operated during WWI or that was used/developed in this
period will be counted as participant. Post your chosen aircraft below so we
can prepare by installing these for the event.

WE WILL FLY ON THE FGMEMBERS server. Make sure you are able to join the server beforehand. Among other reasons, the range of this server is 600+nm, meaning that pilots will remain within the pilot list of each other, regardless of departing time.

Please ask below if you do not comprehend this instructions.

Looking forward to share the FlightGear skies :D

Route:

We will follow a VFR Route at/or around 3500 ft (or lower if weather
requires). No Instrument navigation aid needed in addition to a compass. We will depart Theodore Francis Green Memorial Airport
(KPVD) and turn east, reaching the Providence River. We'll follow this Water
Stream Southbound towards the Atlantic, following Patience Island, Prudence
Island, and Jamestown to the West. As we arrive to Newport Harbor, and
identify Fort Adams Pt State Park, we turn East again to follow the coastlines
of the Atlantic on Vineyard Sound, and border the outer rim of Cape Cod. As we reach Cape Code, we will
turn further North, following the seashorelines, towards Plymouth and further
north the Massachussetts Bay. Heading West on the Massachussetts Bay we'll
find our destination General Edward Lawrece Logan Airport (KBOS).

Okay, I avoid usually to fly the same plane twice and got already the D.III in one lag. Sooooo, either I break that rule or I need to learn to fly another one. Can I take a few days time for the decision?

Why are you persisting on this? Protectionism only harms yourself. You can only loose people loosing interest, but never gain people gaining interest.

I have seen gaining at work at the festival. People flew into the UK asking: What is going on here? Then i get a chance to explain, and they participate enthousiastically, and probably will watch the announcements on the forum for the next edition. But none of that happens when you fly on a secret server.

Kind regards, Vincent

I am just wary of the other servers' owners interest to harm me.
Like the malignant_prostitute that used infrastructure ownership to do it.

I don't want to endanger the Tour out of children's behavior on those guys.

I must add, also thankful to Omega for maintaining that infrastructure. He gains nothing really, but keep some infrastructure that really keeps us safe, and at cost of his (he pays for this).
Same as JWocky that pays and maintains this forum place.

Not using the infrastructure they pay for us to have is therefore not very acknowledging of that effort they do to keep us safe.

Well the expected cruise speed is a little low, as a lot of WWI pursuit planes had landing and stall speeds in the 30~40 knot range. The slowest plane in the flight would be the MFarman11 with the 80 HP Renault, it's cruise is about 65. There a few of the pre-WWI planes like the Fokker Spin and Eastbourne monoplane that could be comfortably cruised at 50 knots. Many of the WWI planes I've developed have a 75 to 90 knot cruise range.

Is there a way to add more miles to the trip and increase the speed?

Thanks for the note Lesbof
I was rather unsure there.

75KTs can do
For increased leg we can go via the Vineyard sound on the outer rim of cape cod, instead of coming thru the coast of Buzzards Bay

I'll amend and post again

Oooookay ... I started to play with the fkdr in JSB ...

Some opinions needed:

1.) The plane had no brakes at all. Which made sense because it was landing on big rectangular grass surfaces which produced a lot of friction, especially when the tail skid was digging a grove through said grass. Can't do it on concrete. So, either I give it a brake, maybe connected to the tail skid, or I compensate for the lower friction on concrete and tarmac by just setting the friction coefficient of the tail skid higher ... but then, if you go down on grass it is like hitting a brick wall.

2.) Since the plane had no brakes, it wasn't controlled by brakes left and right on the runway ... thank you, Captain Obvious ... instead, it was controlled by rudder and ailerons which, at a take-off speed of less than 35 knoits had early some effect. Well, kind of. I dug in some pilot reports. The rudder had obviously enormous effect, the ailerons ... not so much. So, taxiing with rudder, or, if we decide on question 1 to equip her with breaks, rather with breaks left and right? Totally unauthentic, the original from Lester has also a puchback (I move that to the plane menu, it is for unknown reasons hidden in Equipment yet.

3.) Most dr.1s were actually not equipped with the Oberursel II (which was an inferior copy of the LeRhone Revolution) but the LeRhone itself. While on the paper, both engines are pretty similar, the LeRhone had a little higher max rpm and some more pull. The official max speed of 100 knots GS is actually only achievable with the LeRhone as it looks. the Oberursel was five knots lower. So, change to LeRhone? Tune the Oberursel?

4.) Lester: Do you want this in the fkdr1 project or shall I make my own fork?

5.) Israel: Since you play with the thought to go all Red Baron, how hard is this to make?

That is Fokker Dr.1 450/17 flown by Lt. Josef Jacobs, Jasta 7 out of St. Marguerite, paint is from May 1918.
