FZ981 -- 61 die; plane explodes after crashing at high speed on landing

Flight FZ981 was expected to be one of 38-year-old Sokratous’ final flights with the airline, as he was planning to return to live in his native Cyprus with his wife as they awaited the birth of their son. A source close to Sokratous told Gulf News that he had handed his notice into Flydubai and was about to take up a job with Ryanair on Monday.

We can see the fall, but not the event that caused it, covered in clouds. Was it pitch up approaching a stall? Or was it a mechanical failure forcing the nose direct down? We simply can not tell. Let's hope the investigators leak from the boxes soon, to know what happened in that cloud.

Windshear accidents have become very rare in recent years thanks to better forecasting tools, pilot training and sophisticated onboard warning systems. But the phenomenon is still potentially dangerous, and a powerful shear can’t be ruled out at least as a contributing cause of this crash.

(And one aspect of this story that might develop over time is whether we’ll be seeing more accidents like this in the coming years, as climate change brings on more extreme weather events. Hurricane force winds over Russia in March?)

Video footage of the impact shows what appears to be flames coming from the jet before it strikes the ground. These flames might be coming from an engine, and might be the result of engine compressor stalls, which could have occurred as the pilots went to maximum power in a futile effort to climb.

Windshear? A go-around that went bad? Some combination of violent weather and human error, perhaps compounded by an automation or mechanical failure? We’ll find out, most likely, soon enough.

I wonder why people always like to have a crashing plane on fire. Eyewitness reports are notorious for fire that is not there in the final report.

In this film (and others) i see roughly 4 light sources: nose, 2 wing headlights and some tail livery lighting. No fire source whatsoever.

It's a classic image of a crashing aircraft. Wings blazing and nose diving into the ground.. anyways, I also think it's probably nothing more than landing lights. Even as a pilot, he might have overthink it a bit, but I guess he has his reasons - a compressor stall wouldn't be a too far fetched scenario for a pilot thinking about full power in a rain storm..
