Cropping is something I dont know now. But I think I can update it and push it into the terragit sources, that way it gets updated too>

given shapefiles are binaries, and large, I'd dissuade you to push a whole world update for an small patch
(it would just bloat the repo unnecessarily, I think --unless forced pushing is used)

yes. Then we create files like

singapore_cs_landmass
singapore_cs_waterways
singapore_cs_town
etc

I think you can get also some OSM shapefiles to get you fast going.
I think that'll actually give you a hot start.
