Plane Crash in S. Sudan - 41 Dead

Postby HOM001 » Wed Nov 04, 2015 11:33 am

Unfortunately, I write again.

A cargo aircraft departing Juba International Airport in South Sudan has crashed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft came down on the banks of the White Nile at 9AM local time, killing nearly all on the aircraft and several people on the ground. The most recent count puts the death toll at 41, although several sources speculate that this will grow as more details surface. Unlike the last incident, there is hope for survivors - out of the 50 the government reported on the aircraft, only 41 bodies have been recovered, and there are reports of two survivors, a child and crew member.

The aircraft was heading for the Paloch oil fields in the Upper Nile State of the region. Most deaths are believed to be of oil workers. The plane was an Antonov AN-12, built in 1971 and operated by Allied Services Ltd. Registration: EY-406 Eyewitnesses say the plane would have crashed into a busy market had the pilot not veered the aircraft away.

All apparently because someone decided to take too much cargo.

The Sudan Tribune quotes witnesses telling about a double engine failure. But then, if the pilot takes back throttle after the take-off people have often perceived that as "the engines went out", so one can't be too sure about this detail. Bottom line, she didn't climb, but she was at least to a degree steerable. I guess, we will hear more over the next few days.
