Goooooood Morning!
*drum roll*
Here I present:
RIVER VISUAL 19 CHALLENGE

Go on, try it! Post your best videos.
Points will be awarded as follows:

Firm Landing: KDCA'S runway is fairly short. You don't want to be over 400fpm, but you should ideally touchdown firmly at around 150fpm to 250fpm.
Awards 10 points.
Floaters deducted 5 points, hard landings 5 points deducted.

Spoilsort: Proper use of the spoilers and reversers is essential. Get those speedbrakes up; get them reversers going.
Awards 5 points.
Late spoiler extension or reverser extension, late being more than 5 seconds, deducts 5 points.

vFBI: Airspace around Reagen is narrow, due to the Pentagon and Whitehouse. Admire them on the way down the river, but if you as much as put a single inch of wing into Prohibited airspace, expect a couple of F16's.

Awards 20 points. Entering Prohibited airspace immediately deducts 300 points.

Slippy: The final turn is tight. Keep your passengers happy by completing it without skidding or slipping.
Awards 10 points.
Each slip or skid deducts 1 point.

Overrun: At the end of Reagan's runway lies a body of water. Don't pack your swimsuit. Make sure you don't go in, without melting the brakes.

Evidence of hard braking (like, really hard) will deduct 5 points.
An overrun deducts 50 points.

Stressed Out: Tight is the turn. Try to line up properly. Landing while crabbed puts unnatural stresses on the airframe.
Straight approach, no crabbed landing: 50 points
Crabbed Landing: 30 points deducted

Each successful landing earns 150 points.

There is a problem with the landclass data, the river starts only at waypoint 'SETOC' for FG.

IAHM-COL's application to River Challenge

Hey Lego
Here you are

Since yesterday we arrived to KDCA, I firstly completed a Reagan-Dulles flight in the HondaJet
http://mpserver15.flightgear.org/modules/fgtracker/?FUNCT=FLIGHT&FLIGHTID=6659793

After that, and figuring out how to best record my flight, I performed the requested approach on a Dulles - Reagan flight, Visual at 5000; departing RWY 30, arriving RWY 19, River Visual as charted

METAR: Wind on strong-headwind RWY 19 and gusts.

Code: Select all

KDCA 051652Z 19013G19KT 10SM BKN021 OVC029 26/22 A2973 RMK AO2 SLP066 BINOVC T02610217

Here is the video for your ease of point accumulation system:

Enjoy! :D

Awesome flights, wonderful winds!
Do watch your speed; 380 is kinda high, right? :D

Code: Select all

Firm Landing: +10
vFBI: +20
Crabbed Landing: -30
Successful landing: + 150

150 points, good job! A few points deducted for a bit of a crab / skid, but considering the weather good job!

I usually do, but as you saw, my departure went skidding, and I almost lost the rwy, so I took off with a heavy right hand torque, and took me some effort getting a climbing profile there.
That made me loose a bit concentration, and when I noticed I was full throtling...

But then you saw the Hondajet behavior, as soon as I told her to relax... she came down fast and firm to a more apropriate 230 KIAS.

I'm happy with that :)
I came a bit high on that last final (note the four whites). So I was getting speed in the last turn (Damn! that River approach last turn is hectic!!). The winds were gusting and that pushed me off-middle lane, and since I was coming VFR and manual that's how a last sec correction was kind of applied. I throw the plane off the TDZ, and touched down a bit later to prevent the crabbing to break me, and to get a bit more drag out of the speedbrakes.

The hondajet can make really short landings... so RWY 19 was plenty of space, as you could finally see -- I exited runway with plenty of roll-distance to spare :P

The weather was marginal for that attempt too. Ceiling is required to be @three five-hundred for River, and I got overcast 2 nine-hundred. Luckily FG didnt draw me that overcast, cause, again since I came high, I may as well just have missed the whole place.
(the white house, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Pentagon are all noticed on the vid! :) )

Also, I think this is the first time you get to see the Hondajet's zkv1000 in action :)

I just did this nicely. Sorry to say, but a small turn on the end of g/s is not really a challenge. So i will not spend time filming it. As a compensation i will give you a 747-8i on rw 8 at lowi, with the turnaround procedure from approach 26.

That's a hard one. I tried it once, and met the mountain :( (Don't recall what passenger jet I was trying it with, but one of the big boyz)

GS? Well, really, it was supposed to be visual, and rwy 19 is a fair turn. Maybe you are thinking of rwy 15?
