And... The USA TOUR arrives to Little Rock, Arkansas!
Thanks to everyone for their enthusiastic accepting of the USA TOUR call!
This time we had flown from the U.S. Virgin Islands to the State of Arkansas. We had done so, while piloting an all-British fleet, in the event titled "From London With Love". We met as scheduled some minutes before the departure time on Charlotte Amalie's Airport, and we had the chance of showing up several aircraft with USA Tour specific modifications: The DH106 comet with his new BOAC blue livery and new autopilot, and added cockpit instrumentation. The Bae125 also underwent important refurbishment on the cockpit instruments, plus additional modifications in the FDM, and a more stable autopilot. There was the Victor, who made presence after being rescued from a terrible fate: The original Victor happened to be completely unflyable according to all testers, but with some tweaking it made sound and safe presence. There was the Vampire, with a renewed livery set, and general improvements in the model. There was the Vickers Nene Viking that included important engine improvements that made it up to specs to complete the flight. Also, the Eurofighter Typhoon, who had some work done on the FDM, and the autopilot: Also coming from unflyable to a rather stable flyable fighter. In addition, the Typhoon had improvements in the external model, the livery system was updated and improved, a new fictional livery created following the topic of the red arrows, and a complete uber shader combined was prepared with all reflection, normal mapping and lightmapping. In my opinion the plane now looks really sleek. The Panavia tornado received some improvements as well but it did not flew the route. In general, almost every plane present had some work done that allowed the aircraft to be better performing. And that is, in my opinion the greatest step forward in this the 32nd USA TOUR Leg. Sole exception was the Concorde, who made presence in an unedited version from the Official Aircraft Download.
The flight was in all general terms, amazing. The departure happened very smoothly, with each pilot taking off RWY 10, making a turn heading 250 as able, then completing a turn into downwind while climbing to 5000 and heading straight to PALCO. A charted PALCO6 departure. From there we continued to overfly San Juan' SJU while climbing to an stable FL180. Pilots used SJU to complete either one or two holdings allowing the pack to departure on a climbing to FL290 to cruising conditions in a more compacted group, who rapidly organized in our ways to Miami, the Mid point, flying above several northern -caribbean islands like the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. We all approached Miami while descending back to transition altitude, and we held two patterns at Miami VOR (DHP), while some pilots that required a refueling station descended over KMIA RWY 12, refueled and took off again. The whole Miami refueling station took us over 30 minutes, but then we were ready to engage over the skies at FL290 following Florida state northly, and then follow above Alabama, before turning a sharp left at Vulcan (VUZ) facing our destination. During this time, pilots using the Typhoon succesfully performed Aerial Refueling from the Victor. This due possible, thanks to additional improvements in both the Victor, who was made tanker capable, and the Typhoon, that was made Air-refueling capable.
We arrived as a nicely packed flock. Falcon piloting the Nene Vickers came over earlier from a Southernly approach and touched down firstly. The rest of the pack approached Little Rock with a requested Holding at LIT, from which we attempted the charted ILS approach to both RWY 04R and 04L, with two pilots performing parallels. These charts came up with a surprise. A DME-Arc is suggested from the IAF MOMTE, to arrive to the ILS intercept. We used several wayfixes available to approach the ARC and attempt landing. After the arrival, and a long route that cruised for over six hours and some more, a few pilots were time-pressed to leave FG, thus the arriving group pictures lack every participant. But again, each of them had shown the high pilotage quality of Flightgear, and the strong sense of fair sportmanship and good gaming!.
Flightgear has gained reputation for un-scheduled failures as well
Lesbof found his software crashing consistently if he got too close to the pack, probably due to graphic card overloading. This is a very unnecessary and correctable behavior. And one that definitely contributes to spoil the fun. Another Flightgear air explosion was experienced over the Atlantic by Skyboat flying the tanker, while I firstly attempted to refuel.
In addition to the highly predictable software crashing, we also found the very predictable scenery fetching failure. Seriously!
It is rather dissapointing to arrive to your destination in one piece after 6 hours of controlled flying, descend below the cloud ceiling to find another more obscure un-METARed cloud ceiling that floats just above ground surface. The bitter evidence that terrasync is not accepting scenery downloads anymore, and the pilot is now found helpless knowing that the ground level will never be drawn, and the current sole solution is to just drop off fligthgear without the chance of an attempt to land. Frustratingly very common behavior nowadays. IH-COL and G-MNKY both experienced this unfortunate unable to arrive to KLIT, or better said, we are stripped of a fair chance to attempt a landing.
Thanks everyone.... And looking forward to the pleasure of sharing the flightear skies again in the 33rd Leg of the USA TOUR.

USA TOUR event | 31st Leg: | Hybrid (Civilian or Military): McDonnell Douglas | SAT JAN 24TH 17:00 UTC - 23:00 UTC
THIRTYFIRST TRIP
Departing Manchester–Boston Regional Airport,(KMHT): Manchester, New Hampshire
Arriving Cyril E. King Airport,(TIST): Charlotte Amelie, U.S. Virgin Islands
***********************************************************************************************
Leg Distance: approx 1500 nm
Competing Aircraft: Any Aircraft manufactured by McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company (Hybrid: Civilian + Military)
Expected Cruising Speed:~350KTAS
Expected Cruising Altitude:FL250-FL290
Expected Duration (en route): ~4h00min
***********************************************************************************************
Our last trip to Manchester, New Hampshire broke the USA tour record of active participant and company connections at any given time. Besides, we peaked to 18 pilots on range. We saw the return of old-timers such as Side, and Lesbof, and the most recent faithful additions JWOCKY, F36, Skyboat, Cain, and many others share game. It was soo amazing. This many planes took an amazing 25 minutes to airlift, and a similar time to touchdown back to land. And no time-loosing strategies: just chained "clear to take off" and "clear to land" instructions executed in train.
Oh yes! train. That's how the convoy looked like cruising nort-east bound from the southern states (Louisiana) to the Northern States of the New England Area (New Hampshire). We used VOR tracking radials to purely navigate the proposed route. (some RNAV points were kinda ignored, but we remain closely over the J48 route nonetheless. Our following radials created a line of pilots over those radials, and though it didnt look like a formation, it surely looked amazing, and train-like.
Weather was mostly cooperative but a bit head-winded. Low overcasts most the whole trip (at or around the 4000ft height), and definitely there on both departure and arrival. it was great to cross down the clouds ceiling and see the ground there (specially with all the terrasync weirdness goin' on lately). Furthermore it gives some challenge to be holding Gardner at 4000 and be purely IFRing. As described in the previous USA tour thread, we arrived as a packed flock, but broke formation on Gardner, where we all very organizedly held an one-minute leftsided pattern 118/298, as shown in the IFR charts of the area. From gardner, one pilot at a time (the one reaching 3000ft) was directed to go for the ILS approach, where Michat volunteered to Tower us down. A very impressive performance for a rather convoluted group maneuver. I frequently saw planes up and below my windshield while performing the hold. Very close, but safely up and down. An unforgettable experience.
All I can say is: I am looking forward for our next USA tour adventure! And this time we will be heading toward another USA territory (as opposed to an State). The beautiful and Caribbean U.S. Virgin Islands
Aircrafts
What Aircraft shall I choose If I want to be considered one of the Elite of USA Tour Participants?! Well this time any participant will be who pilots a McDonnell Douglas Aircraft.
In the previous legs, USA tour have had "Manufacturer's Exclusive" Legs. We flew an All Boeing fleet in our way from Alabama to Idaho (B7x7 USA Tour Event), and we flew an All Airbus fleet in our way from Alaska to Nevada (What happes in FG USA Tour event)
Now it will be the turn to tour the McDonnell Douglas: This being another Hybrid event, for airplanes of Civilian and/or Military use.
Importantly:
The company McDonnell Douglas is formed after the fussion of Douglas (who produced the infamous DC3, DC4, and DC6), and McDonell Aircraft company. This fussion occurred in 1967. Later, the company will be integrated to the Aviation American Monopoly of Boeing Aircraft Company (in 1997). The aircraft valid for this leg are all those produced in the 30 years span the company existed as the McDonnell Douglas conglomerate [exception: Helicopters. These cannot hold the cruising conditions realistically]. And believe me, they did produce some Awe-inspiring craft (not all of which may be available in FG, but were to be valid for this leg if they were)!

USA TOUR event | 30th Leg: Manchester - New Hampshire | Hybrid (Civilian or Military): Multiple Propeller engines (three or more) | SAT DEC 20TH 17:00 UTC - 24:00 UTC
THIRTIETH TRIP
Departing Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport,(KMSY): New Orleans, Louisiana
Arriving Manchester–Boston Regional Airport,(KMHT): Manchester, New Hampshire
***********************************************************************************************
Leg Distance: approx 1200 nm
Competing Aircraft: Any Aircraft propeller-powered having three or more engines (Civilian, and/or Military)
Expected Cruising Speed:~ 190KTS
Expected Cruising Altitude:FL170-FL190
Expected Duration (en route): ~6h30min
***********************************************************************************************
USA Tour arrival to New Orleans was done in style. Lots of participants excelsing in performance flew Jet-Bombers, from New York to Louisiana. As expected some scenery lag at New York, but it did not prevent us to succeed in reaching our objective.
For the last USA Tour of 2014, and preparing to enter the tour in a New Year, we will be flying back to the New-England States, this time targeting Manchester, New Hampshire: We will be arriving the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
(I strongly suggest having Winter scenery mode for this one, and hope for a Christmas Snow-shower!)
Aircrafts
We will be flying propeller driven aircraft having at least three engines and capable to sustain 260 KIAS at FL210-FL250. This is an Hybrid event so Civilian Aircraft, as well as Military Aircraft is allowed. And Off course aircraft used in either configuration are a plus
There are quite a good number of options. And quite good options (unlike bombers, where decent models may scarce)
I am flirting with the Connie, but If I can't get myself comfortable on this one, I will jump into the always docile DC6.
Let us know what planes you plan to bring, for us to be ready to go
The GCMAP
Route
I suggest attempt using VOR radio navigation to attempt following the next route (some waypoints may be RNAV and approximations will need to be made)

USA TOUR event | 29th Leg: New Orleans - Louisiana | Bombers in Jets | SAT NOV 29TH 17:00 UTC - 22:00 UTC
TWENTYNINTH TRIP
Departing La Guardia International Airport, (KLGA): New York, New York
Arriving Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, (KNBG): New Orleans, Louisiana
***********************************************************************************************
Leg Distance: approx 1030 nm
Competing Aircraft: Any Jet-Powered Bomber (we'll sustain the speed of the slowest participant. Range does not matter, multiple airports to reload if necessary)
Expected Cruising Speed:~ 370KTS (or slowest participant)
Expected Cruising Altitude:FL280-FL320, even altitudes
Expected Duration (en route): ~3h11min @ 370KTS

Flightgear's USA Tour 29th: Jet Powered Bombers (Any generation)
We arrived to New York, New York (music) in Aerostats, completing the shortest USA Tour, and Landed (surprisingly) in Kennedy Airport.
For the continuation of our Tour over the USA territories, we will depart a secondary airport North-West long-Island: La Guardia Airport. This airport, together with Kennedy and Newark make an interesting tri-angle, including three of the busiest airports on The World, creating the New York Airspace nightmare: One of the most heavy transited of the world, and certainly not the common scenario for a Ballon-fest
Taking back the dialog, we will depart La Guardia, using it as a transient military base, and we will fly any Jet powered Aircraft that had been (or is being) used as a Bomber Aircraft. Then we will head SouthWest into the fantastic Land of Louisiana: If once JWOCKY said that we should plan a gourmet tour, Louisiana is certainly a well deserving destination.
(and for those that mix Food with Jazz, a forced destination indeed!)
So test your bombers, and I will be waiting for you the following November 29th at 17UTC, in La Guardia. [It is the first time that it is a coincidence We will fly the leg 29th on the 29th]
Aircrafts
Any military jet that has been employed as a bomber qualifies. Any generation or performance. Flightgear has some models, and they may not be the most developed planes ever. Make sure to tailor your aircraft beforehand. Consider looking over FGUK hangar for possible options, or the FG download pages.
I will place a list of confirmed planes below
After doing some initial tests, I fell in love with the Arado 234C. A very old German Bomber, that has amazing FDM, it flies great, good instruments for flight, and an amazing 360deg view cockpit [not quite but check the model to get my point ]. Hopefully I get awesome views in my way to Louisiana

Re: USA TOUR past events | Record
The USA Tour arrived to New Orleans
WOW ... Having Jambalaya and listening Jazz! Oh BOY!
The entertainment in USA tour today was so great that it actually almost made me sick.
The hours seemed a minute, and when I call for descend I started thinking ! oh ?! already?!
The piloting was exceptional. I am almost too proud of my fellow USA Tourists, for an immaculate execution. (set aside horrible crash landing by myself).
For if words are matter of doubts, and images are worth some number of these, but rarely questioned, we can all see Definee's arrival train again here for a nicely distanced approach (and this after holding SEMMES for achieving this nice separation)
Departure was done in RWY 13 at La Guardia, complete calm 00000K winds, and we performed a left turn 050 and holding to north of the island to wait for everyone being airborn. Maintaining 5000. Once everyone in the air we head 140 then 280 to COL (the waypoint, not me), from which we engage the route, trying to take nice pictures and interchanging cool talk about bombers and other matters.
LesBof couldn't find a bomber that tailored him, so he tested the A3D and the B2 for a while meantime we cruised southwest.
Participation was abundant, and companionship as well, and we created some stir unseen in the east-coast, some times matching and rivaling the west coast when it came to traffic density. Thanks everyone for participating and accepting the USA tour call!
Expect announcement for the last USA tour of 2014, with Leg 30th soon! (to take place on December 20th)!

Flightgear's USA Tour 28th: Aerostats
Start spreadin' the news,
We're leavin' [s]today[/s] the Fifteenth
We want to be a part of it
New York - New York
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it
New York - New York
After our arrival to Newark in style, I promised that USA Tour Leg 28th will be an unusual one. I even went further to reserve the secrecy of the event until today (announcement).
Let me also recall that previous legs of the USA tour had been mind-buggling long, particularly after our departure to the far pacific territories (Guam, leg 20th, Alaska leg 21st, American Samoa Leg 25th, and Hawaii Leg 26th) the USA tour leg-size had been... yes, simply put, mind-buggling.
I hope next route will be shorter

OK Lego. Hopefully next time.
Oh! And though I will be unveiling no more at the moment, next leg is shorter, all right !!!
Well, fate. Leg 28th is
The Shortest USA Tour Leg
Connecting the State of New Jersey to the State of New York with a great circle route of 21 nm. (For those unaware, on such short distances, the great circle route is derivated to be the same as an straight line, as oppose to a curve).
In addition. Leg 28th is
The Middle point of the USA Tour
Having visited 25 states and 3 special territories, we will complete exactly half of our 56 planned routes. Definitely not the middle point when considering total flying distance thou, since we are comfortably past that point, again after our wanderings in the far pacific.
We will meet Saturday November 15th at 19:00 UTC, leaving a resting week after FS Weekend's fun. We will play around and try to fly the ballons and zeppelins. I hope that by leaving almost a month before the event pilots have enough time to improve their skills into lifting the "unusual" air-craft.
<<Most hot air balloon launches are made during the cooler hours of the day, at dawn or two to three hours before sunset. At these times of day, the winds are typically light making for easier launch and landing of the balloon. Flying at these times also avoids thermals>>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_air_ballooning
Sunset in New York will be ocurring 2:30 hours later at approximately 21:30UTC. At that time I hope we had succesfully touched down in JKF's space.
Aircrafts
This time the official aircrafts participating the USA Tour will be the aerostats:
