Will it end badly?

Postby J Maverick 16 » Sat Jul 09, 2016 9:33 am

Discussing about the new MQ-9 UAV and YouKnowHow obviously had to give his opinions...
https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic. ... 59#p290259

I'm not sure if what I've wrote will somehow make me a future target for getting banned from the official forum, but I can't just stand reading this way of dealing with other alternatives which aren't the "normal", trusted and always-used way in FG.

Not to add fuel to this... but are these two alternatives to damage implementation exclusive? (can't they be both used in either one version or two versions of a given aircraft?)

A second question I have.
I know bombable can't be used against your will. That is; if you don't have bombable installed/patched in your system, you can't be brougth down.

With the damage nasal system: Do pilots still have this "option out"? or could you found yourself the easy target of a troll?

Sorry if I over steped.... but I've had enough of that c8nt.

Bomber wrote - If i thought I could learn anything from you about aerodynamic damage I'd listen, but from what you've written in the past I know full well you're a long way behind me on it.

Thosten wrote
Like you 'knew' I couldn't come up with an FDM...

This is to you, Maverick just as well as PINTO - I am really getting tired of this 'you haven't done X in FG, you have no clue'.

Damage of an airframe is (irreversible) deformation of materials. Aerodynamics is applied fluid dynamics. It's all physics... You'd think that with a background in theoretical physics, the ability to understand and solve the math of differential equations and experience in computational fluid dynamics I'm quite qualified to talk about these things without even being interested in them or having done any.

You'd also think that having written guidance systems for a spacecraft and solved the math of overcoming numerical artifacts for objects moving at 8 km/s in FG proves that I really *really* know how to solve equations of motion, trajectory intersections and so on. You'd think that having actually coded one of the most sophisticated failure systems in FG proves that theoretical knowledge really maps into FG.

It's not even that I'm not interested in military aviation - it just seems the community doing it is so hell-bent on alienating knowledgeable people that it just got bumped way down my priority list, otherwise you'd have things a library of explosion shader effects or a fire damage model at your disposal which I've been developing and then dropped because I really do not want to put up with this.

But please - if you think the problem you're trying to address has nothing to do with physics, differential equations or fluid dynamics - just disregard everything I say. Because that's what I know really well. So whatever would I know of damage modeling since I'm not doing a warplane?

So at the end of the day - what precisely is your qualification here? What's your math background?

I rather like having a conversation about this and that.... but YOU simply want to tell us what your opinion is and the devil to a design discussion, because you have no idea how to go about having such a thing with your peers.

Actually you have to implement a "repair" option to your aircraft if you get shot or better a disable option (something the most advanced OPRF aircrafts have) to prevent that.

It's incredibly easy to add an on/off switch to the damage code. It's setting one property. And yes, it can coexist with bombable, but you'd need to only use one at a time. Yes, you can get trolled if your running with damage enabled. If that's something you worry about, turn off damage or fly another plane.

If the damage.nas isn't implemented well, then it will be always-on. So beware those if you don't wanna get shot down.

I like the disable switch idea a lot

Really solves the problem and keeps the best of both worlds.
