Gear collapse? From another news source I read that they were asked to go around. Based on this 2 news source, I deduce:
1. They were having gear problems, trying to bump the gear out, but failed and contacted the ground hard. But the passengers apparently weren't informed about this, so;
2. ..according to another news, the ATC instructed them to go around, probably saw that there was a gear failure and somehow the pilots missed the signs of it, but too late to do anything about it, aircraft lands unbalanced on remaining gears, skids and catches fire.
At the end of the day, It was very fortunate all passengers were evacuated and safe, and the result of such safety requirements built into new aircraft unlike the old days where it all just means a big fireball immediately after something like this..

Last second go around in Dubai with WS is a very high risk scenario.
With a prevailing temperature of 49 degrees Celsius and barometric pressure of 0993, both pressure and density altitude are high considering the actual field elevation of 62 ft. Coupled with Wind Shear Alert, conditions were quite adverse.

A very weird story for now. For one, the event was totally unexpected. Passengers claim not to have had any announcements. The tower says that it was a normal landing, with the only glitch that the cockpit crew made a go around announcement. Nothing in the extra ordinary there.
Yet the aircraft managed to touch down at the end of the runway gear up.
What are the options? End of runway... Gear up... Sounds definitly like a go around going horribly wrong. Did they stall in go around? Was there windsheer? Or did they simply do the wrong things? Maybe gear up too early? Or did they forget the gear in the first place, causing the go around?
Many questions to be answered in a years time when the report comes out. But i can not deny the unsettling sense that we have to do again with a less than adequate trained crew.
One thing is certain, the 777 has proven itself again as a hell of a strong tank. Whatever mishandling, the passengers survive. Sorry to hear about the firefighter that diseased.
