Well I'd frankly be really honored SHM, I've got most of the shapefile for the Phillip island course, and I've laid out the track for Bathurst using the 'model railroad' technique that Marc uses. I don't know if it can be used as an overlay or if it would have to be binned and start from scratch with Open Scene Map or what ever would qualify for the layout. Can rounded edge curbing, as in the common road curbing like you often see on the edges of F-1 race courses, be made in WED or TerraGear/QGis?
Will the race courses need to be absolutely flat if made in Wed, because it's not going to work well if there isn't some banking to some of the turns and both PI and Bathurst have gradients with climbs and descents.

Sounds great
@SHM if you get the WED and the shapefile lake overlay, I'll throw that to terragear and create the Custom Scenery, so Lesbof can continue with 3d work

If we gave everybody in the World free software today, but we failed to teach them about the four freedoms, five years from now, would they still have it?

Sounds like a plan. And lester did you say that you made some custom shapefiles for it?

Kerbs cannot be made in any, but I could leave some concrete area for you to put the kerbs.

All WED does is the 2d work. The SRTM data gives the elevation. So it all depends on the SRTM data.

Re: Creating racetracks using WED or something similar?
we can push the slope at which the WED work follows the SRTM data terrain. But lesbof is right, smoothing is applied to aprons/taxiways/runways to some degree.
To gain leverage, we can actually just increase the slope allowance, but this is not going to follow terrain with perfect accuracy no matter what.
So, that point Lesbof raised is indeed a caveat of this approach

Re: Creating racetracks using WED or something similar?
I'll post this video of what I've got so far. Just as an example of what I'm up against with the present scenery SRTM elevation problems.
As you can see there places where the terrain is poking through the road course, I'm beginning to think my present model isn't quite refined enough, needs more triangles, could be less angular..

Only in the Z-asix right? Most tracks have banking turns (X-Axis)

You can model x-y axis with great accuracy in WED.
The elevation profile and banking on Z is where we will get some issues at.
