Re: Date for next leg of World's Challenging Approaches?
Today, I visited Paro at Bhutan (VQPR). Here is flight log : https://fgtracker.ml/modules/fgtracker/ ... ID=6920728
Rwy in sight !
Lining up with 33 :
Not absolutly ideal touch down :
At "terminal" :
I used standard flightplan, take off from ZBAA, 40 miles before Paro VOR (PRO 108.4 Mhz) switched off INS navigation and continued manualy direct to VOR. 3 miles before VOR turned right to 320 and performed visual approach and land on 33. Braking pads has been scrapped (see smoke around main gear), because short runway and 30 tons FOB.
Short flight from Thribuvan to Paro should be the next Challenge.
EDIT :
Added some images.

That's such an oversized craft, it deserves mentioning in the Willy

If we gave everybody in the World free software today, but we failed to teach them about the four freedoms, five years from now, would they still have it?

Re: Date for next leg of World's Challenging Approaches?
Paro is not the next challenge. It is the only challenge. It is the only airport that really forces me to work hard. (Landed there a couple of times with the 777)
And i know what i am talking about. I have had most of the weirdest Andes airports. Let's say Quito with no visibility is a breeze compared to Paro with visibility.
Edit:
Btw, a normal jet should not be able to make the descent for rw 33 from the mountain at VOR PRO (if it can, it is a fg bug). From that VOR, you can do the approach for rw 15 by turning in the left valley after the airport. For rw 33 i have seen RL footage with a descent through the river valley to the right of VOR PRO.
Kind regards Vincent

Re: Date for next leg of World's Challenging Approaches?
Normal jets can descent from PRO to the valley, but with price of dangerous landing speed. I tried take off from 15 with Boeing 707, climb to FL150, then turn back and descent to the valley. After some hard work with steering I was able soft land on 33. B707's turning rate is too low, but enough for that landing.
Re: Date for next leg of World's Challenging Approaches?
And again back in Paro. Now, after some mistakes - see flight track :
Concorde has not modern navigation display, it is very big handicap in case of complicated approach like this.
EDIT :
Bye bye Paro !
Afterburner engaged, climbing to FL300 with vertical speed more than 8000 fpm.
