TerraGIT 3.4 Worldwide Terrain Upgrade: Worldwide Release Announcement
A FGMEMBERS Project

Image

FGMEMBERS is pleased to announce the release of TerraGIT 3.4, its global scenery package for the Open Source Flight Simulator, FlightGear. The upgrade is a worldwide scenery repository generated in 10°x 10° tiles and managed by git.
TerraGIT 3.4 is a world terrain regeneration constructed using the next-generation terragear with custom adaptations. Three new features are integrated into this version:

  • Elevation Errors Are Corrected
Elevation for airports was computed using ViewFinder Panorama SRTM-3. Improvements on the terragear tool-chain allowed us to correct and eliminate identified elevation errors across the globe. Numerous airports were then assessed and the previous inconsistencies were found to be resolved.
  • New Airport Specifications Via the X-Plane Gateway Database
Over the past four years, there has been a dramatic increase of airports receiving layout improvements created by the dedicated aviation enthusiast's community (via the X-Plane gateway database). TerraGIT 3.4 ships with its own complete airport database upgrade, with all the new layout improvements for an enriched and enjoyable worldwide FlightGear experience.
  • Highly Detailed Custom-Made Landclass Specifications
TerraGIT 3.4 contains a comprehensive list of custom landclass specifications derived from data made available from the OpenStreetMap (2020, OSM) project, the CORINE (2018, for Europe) project and the Natural Earth (for urban classes) project. A scenery enhancement is produced that enriches the visual experience in contrast to the default FlightGear terrasync scenery and previous terraGIT applications, which used a default "v0" landclass scenery platform. The result is a scenery rendering that generates the landscape panorama in exquisite detail.

We at FGMEMBERS are certain you will enjoy the new detail and quality of the scenery. Feel free to submit improvements for the terrain, as well as additional models by way of the git repositories, hosted at github.com.

Instructions on how to Obtain TerraGIT 3.4

Detailed instructions on how to obtain terraGIT are available in the README.md file in the terraGIT repository.
Note: Cloning a complete set of tiles for a global installation will take time, depending on the speed of your download line the speed at which your computer can write to the hard drive and space on your hard drive. A complete World installation requires around 320Gb.

I Already Have terraGIT. How do I Update It?

If you already have terraGIT, you can update it using git. However, since this new version is a complete reworking of the scenery content, there is a simpler and faster method: Wipe out your current version of terraGIT (or archive it if you have sufficient hard drive space) and create a fresh installation through cloning the submodules of the new terraGIT.
If you choose to update, use the following command-line set:

In the terragit repository:

Code: Select all

   git pull
   git submodule sync
git submodule update  --progress #This command-line set updates only the tiles you currently have installed.
#You may add more tiles any time or clone the remaining tiles for a full global installation.

If we gave everybody in the World free software today, but we failed to teach them about the four freedoms, five years from now, would they still have it?

3 years ago I installed a 3-screen,yoke,pedals simulator based on FlightGear in a hotel.
This week the hotel-manager asked me if I can update everything for him.

So I typed "TerraGIT" in my search engine an now I'm very happy to see that you are still improving and updating the world scenery.

thank you very much!

How much disk space will I need for the world v3.2 ?

Greetings from Germany,
Martin / d-laser

Hi Martin
Long time no see. Thanks again for that evening with Brazilian BBQ :D

This is the bare answer

Code: Select all

me@host:~/local/source/terraGIT> du -sch
324G   .
324G   total
me@host:~/local/source/terraGIT>

Long answer

If you git pull and update an old terraGIT is going to be larger than that because you will have local copies of the previous versions.

Wiping off the old terraGIT completely is thus recommended, as this new version completely reworked every tile worldwide.
All new landclasses from OSM worldwide, CORINE in europe. Special classes from other sources for Urban.,

Terragear is by default currently broken, so I have to make significant changes in the sourcecode to get a proper terrain. No elevation errors.

So all in all, I deem worth to update.

The 320G above is a whole planet fetch that I recently did locally.

As you know, if you have less tiles that a whole world it would be appropriately smaller

Larger tiles are central europe and some places of Continental USA

@ D-LASER
I recently fetched the all updated dsf from X-Plane and I'm working on your tools so they run again (python 3 this time)

I got it to run
https://github.com/FGMEMBERS-SCENERY/d- ... ree/2020_1

And that's great.

At the moment just troubled because the fgelev.py is not outputing correctly. I am trying to get it fixed
(fgelev running perfect from shell thou)

Finally, when I get it to run, the P3000 will include 15000 airports total, which I;m very much looking forward to update in tGit

I am glad it's working really smoothly

After 8h, I've got down to 2840 aircraft specifications completed. 12000 to go :D

testing TerraGIT 3.2

Postby laserman » Fri Nov 20, 2020 12:14 am

I did

install/Europe (111GB)

and later

install/World

du -sh
301G
...19GB less than you have.

I checked EDLM, EDLE, EDDL - they look good, except one road at EDLM is missing compared to scenery 2.0 and the real world.
then I checked KLAS and KJFK: no buildings, no P3000 stuff and problems with taxyways/apron at KLAS

cd /space/flightgear/terraGIT/Objects/w080n40/w074n40
bash: cd: /space/flightgear/terraGIT/Objects/w080n40/w074n40: No such file or directory
(Objects/w080n40 is empty)

git pull
Already up to date.
/space/flightgear/terraGIT$ install/USA
..did nothing

what about nice custom airports like EDDB and EDDK? shall we include them in TerraGIT?

with terraGIT it makes sense to use the latest apt.dat from Xplane so that parking & runway locations are correct, right ?
