Range ... and ETOPS

Hi,

can someone explain something to me. If a plane has 5670 nm range and ETOPS180, does that mean, she can stay even three hours more in the air if something comes up in mile 5669? And if so, at which altitude and which speed? Or, in other words, how much more needs a plane really if it is labeled with 5670nm range?

Etops is about the furthest you can be away of landing. So etops 180 means you have to stay within 180 miles of any rw. Etops comes in to play, when you do oceanic flights, over land it is never a problem.

And does that mean, a plane having 5670nm is justified for falling out of the sky at 5700?

Its 180min.

The minute distance is calculated using the aircraft’s speed with one engine inoperative in still air (no wind).

My mistake, it is minutes, not miles indeed. As SHM says, the distance to the nearest airport should be observed in case of engine faillure. The plane is certified for that distance on one engine.

So yeah, can't find any quiet air here ... but at least, I can find 3 hours with 1 engine as long as I don't run out of fuel.
